An audiophile wrote the Best power cable article. And after a month of testing is the final chapter in a series of power cable comparisons. It was 14/02/2021, and a discussion between friends began about computer performance. Antanas Šėmis is an audiophile and computer builder. And Antanas wants the best sound possible from his computer. The computer used for testing, built by Antanas, resulted from many months searching for the best components available without breaking the bank!
Best power cable
The computer constructed by Antanas Semis using the following components
- MB – ASUS Z390-i / CPU – i9-9900K
- GPU – uses integrated to the processor UHD Graphics 630
- Sound card – Creative Sound Blaster AE-9
- RAM – 2x32GB HyperX Predator
- SSD – Samsung 970 EVO Plus 1TB
- Cooling – Noctua NH-D15
- PSU – Corsair SF750 (platinum cert.)
The final step is to build a futuristic case to house the computer with features in keeping with the concept. ‘High-end’ every which way!
Sound card power
The computer used is equipped with the Sound Blaster AE9. The core of which is the flagship audiophile-grade hi-res ESS SABRE-class 9038 DAC. Delivering, an ultra-high DNR of 129 dB. Also, 32-bit 384 kHz playback over PCM, DSD64, with incredibly low Total Harmonic Distortion of -120 dB
The AE-9’s ‘CleanLine’ technology features specially designed circuitry and components, eliminating voltage rail issues and isolating noise along the microphone path. Something that typically plagues internal audio cards is also utilising a differential drive for the mic signal to reduce the common-mode noise induced by other electronic sources.
Power cables
Perkune audiophile cables supplied the power cables used for the testing period. The computer power cable, the Matrix power cable, the reference power cable, and the reference two power cable. The lines ranged from 200 euros to 2000 euros. And the most exciting thing to know whether there was such a difference in cable performance as there was in cable price?
The first test
The first test was exciting, and the Perkune Computer cable used, priced at 95 euros. And I have to say, the first impression was unbelievable. I left all settings and volume the same, but now the music sounded louder, more transparent and brighter. Also, the sound stage became more significant. There was a much-improved bass that was tight with greater depth. And, the room became alive with the performers. Also, I heard things I never heard before!
The second test
The second test was as exciting as the first. And this time, Paul had brought the ‘Matrix’ power cable. The ‘Matrix’ power cable details at 397 euros, so I expected to hear a difference in sound. I would never have believed that just replacing a power cable could do so much. And, the new sound giving me so much pleasure. There is more of everything, and it seemed like the line removed a load of rubbish from the music. The clarity is fantastic, and I can’t stop listening. Also, regarding the price, I will say it is money well spent. Because, I had the opportunity to improve my system.
The third test
The third test was even more exciting. Paul had brought the Perkune ‘Reference’ Power cable with him. The cable was two meters in length and 19 mm in diameter and was an absolute joy to look at and to hold. The Reference had a price of 1497 euros, and I was impressed and equally excited to hear what this monster could do in my system. As I sat and listened, I realised just how far up the ladder the cable had taken me. And hearing things I never heard before. First was the vast soundstage and how the music filled the room. And, the second was the utter clarity in the vocals. The third point was how everything was transparent and utterly isolated from the following instrument. The bass was so full and rich. And exactly where it was supposed to be.
At this point, I said I would like to change back to the original computer power cable to hear how it would sound. And the difference was unbelievable. The music was flat, lifeless, and the 3D had gone. There was no depth, no energy and no life in the music. The sound I heard was so lacking in comparison to how it has been. The funny thing was when I listened to my system, it sounded right. It is not until I took part in this experiment that I understood how bad my good was!
The fourth test
I was in total amazement when Paul walked into my apartment. Because in his hand was the Perkune three-meter Reference 2 power cable. I just looked at this monster as Paul removed and unrolled from the carrying case. This Power cable was three meters in length and 20 mm. diameter and an incredible feel. But, comes with a price tag of 1997 euros.
Perkune Reference 2 was unique, and I just knew it would help my system sound better. And, now, Reference 2 was ready. So, we sat back to listen to the test track we used every time. The music was from ‘Yello’ and taken from the latest album ‘Point’. I heard such a difference from the first second. The music was more involving and presented with a sound stage that filled my room. Transparency and clarity were the best I have ever heard, and I said I could listen to Sylvia from the vocal! It was just amazing, and I felt such an incredible feeling as if I was part of the music!
Reference 2 was something special, and I just knew it would help my system to sound better. And, now, Reference 2 was ready. So, we sat back to listen to the test track we used every time. The music was from ‘Yello’ and taken from the latest album ‘Point’. I heard such a difference from the first second. The music was more involving and presented with a sound stage that filled my room. Transparency and clarity were the best I have ever heard, and I said I could listen to Sylvia from the vocal! It was just amazing, and I felt such an incredible feeling as if I was part of the music!
Conclusion
As I said earlier, I would never have believed that just replacing a power cable could do so much to the sound of my system. And repeating everything three times, I understand what a power cable can do. I decided to stick with the ‘Matrix’ Power cable because it allows me to hear everything and is the best value for money. Also, this month has been a truly remarkable and uplifting experience for me. And I want to say thank you to Paul and Perkune audiophile cables for making it possible.
